How to do a Textured Fringe
Textured Fringe Haircut. Are you in?
From gym bros on TikTok to star quarterbacks – and even Superman is sporting the highly publicized Textured Fringe Cut. (You may know it better as the Alpaca haircut, the Bird’s Nest, Zoomer Perm or the Broccoli haircut.) The key is, it’s here to stay, and if you are interested in achieving it – we are here to help.
What is a Textured Fringe Haircut?
The Textured Fringe Cut has short, uneven textured layers on top (resembling broccoli florets) with short-to-the-scalp or buzzed sides. It suits any face shape – and if you have curly hair, you’re golden. For guys with straighter hair, a little product and choppier layers help to get that curly and unruly look.
How to do a Textured Fringe Haircut
1. Dampen and Comb Hair

Use a spray bottle to wet your hair. Then comb through it to remove tangles.
2. Remove Bulk in Back

If your hair is grown out in the back and on the sides, you’ll want to cut it shorter to achieve the fade. Use the clipper-over-fingers technique in sections 1 and 2, leaving about a half inch of hair in section 1 and a few inches of hair in section 2.
3. Create the Low Fade

Start in section 1 with your clipper, no guard. Starting at the base of the neck, cut upward in a straight line up to the bottom of the ears. Once section 1 is complete, move on to the lower area of section 2. Add the #1/2 guard and cut up an inch, then switch to a #1 guard and move up another inch. For a tighter fade, open and close the taper lever between guard lengths to achieve a smoother blend. Follow the instructions for section 2 to create the fade behind, above and in front of the ears.
4. Blend Up

Use your Wahl clipper with a #3 guard to blend the area where the fade and longer hair meet. Make sure to use an upward rocking motion, as the intent is to remove some of the bulk and create a structured transition.
5. Cut the Top

For section 4, the length is up to you. To keep it longer, use the clipper-over-fingers technique and cut evenly to your desired length.
6. Add Texture

Using the clipper over fingers technique, take clumps of hair throughout the top and apply point cutting. This can be done by holding the clipper vertically and tapping into the hair with the blade with no guard. Avoid cutting the hair straight across.
7. Apply Pomade

To create your desired style, add a small amount of pomade or hair gel to your hands, rub them together and run your fingers through your hair. Give it more texture and volume by squeezing large sections of your hair in your hands, then move the hair around until you’re satisfied with the look.
Your Textured Fringe Haircut Questions:
How do I style a Textured Fringe Haircut?
Start by washing and conditioning your hair. Conditioner will help add the volume this haircut deserves to look its best. Once your hair is dry, you can add some gel or pomade to allow you to push your hair in the direction you want—slightly angled in front or pushed forward.
Do you have to fade the sides to achieve the Textured Fringe haircut?
To create texture, you need to understand point cutting, which requires holding the clipper vertically and cutting various sections of hair on the top of the head using the clipper over fingers technique. The longer the hair between your clipper and fingers, the more texture you add to your hair. Just make sure not to cut straight across, as this will remove too much hair and create an uneven look.
How do you create the signature textured look on the top of your hair?

What does the taper lever do?
A taper lever allows you to adjust closeness between guards. While each guard cuts 1/8 inch less hair the higher you go, the taper lever allows you to minimize that difference between guard lengths to create a blended look. For instance, if you cut the bottom of your hair with #1 and the middle of your hair with a #2 guard, you can close the taper lever with the #2 guard to blend the hair between the two lengths.
How do I know if the Textured Fringe Haircut will suit me?
Hair that is curly or thick and wavy works best for this hairstyle. If you’re not sure if your hair is wavy, grow it out for several months. You can still pull off this look if you have straight hair, but you’ll want to add plenty of texture to the top to give it some dimension.
What is the difference between the Textured Fringe Haircut and the Edgar Haircut?
The Edgar Haircut is usually shorter on top with straight bangs across the forehead. The Textured Fringe Haircut is longer on top and usually features more texture with longer, uneven bangs.
