Find the Best Beard for Your Face Shape

Your face is what makes you one-of-a-kind—it’s what makes you, you. And, of course, your facial hair is all part of your distinct look. If you’ve dabbled with a beard or mustache, or are a seasoned aficionado, you may not know the power facial hair can have on your overall appearance and your confidence.

Find out what Beard is Best for Your Face Shape

Welcome to our easy Face Shape Finder process.  
You will need: 

  • Bathroom mirror
  • Flexible tape measure
  • Pen and paper or phone  
  • Your face! Clean shaven or with minimal stubble 

Step 1. Face Length, First  
Using your tape measure, start at the top center of your hairline (generally the widest part of the forehead) and measure down to the center bottom of the chin. Jot down the number. If you’re using a pen and paper, draw a face – then add a line and the measurement of each step. Otherwise, adding them to your phone is fine.

Step 2. Forehead, Next  
For best results, and for those with a receding hairline, measure from the outer edge of one eyebrow to the outer edge of the other. Record the measurement.

Step 3. Now Cheekbones  
Start by finding the highest point of each cheekbone (typically outside the outer corner of each eye) and measure from one cheek bone to the next. Make sure the tape measure goes over the bridge of your nose. Not under. Take note of that measurement.

Step 4. Finally, Chin/Jawline  
Start by noting the shape of your jawline – is it pointed, rounded or squared off? (This will factor in later). Now, put your tape measure at the center bottom of your chin and follow the angle of the jawline upwards at its sharpest angle. Note this measurement. Rather than measuring the other jawline, double this number.  
 
And that’s your final measurement. Scroll now to find out your results. 

Choose a Beard Style by your Face Shape.

1. The Round Face
This could be you if… Your cheekbones and face length measurements are similar, and your chin is rounded rather than angular.

This beard style for round faces focuses attention on the center of the face. Keep the style trimmed in a narrow, compact style with hair longer on the bottom and shorter on the sides. 

For those looking for a more facial hair style, the Tight Beard can also be flattering on men with a rounder face shape. Just make sure to keep the sides tight and hair on the chin a little longer.

2. The Triangle Face (or Heart-Shaped Face) 
This could be you if… You have a broad, prominent jawline, and that measurement is the largest. Your next highest measurement is your cheekbone, which is smaller than your Outline of a triangle face. forehead measurement.  

Celebs with a Triangle Shaped Face: Timothée Chalamet, Tom Cruise 
Beards to Try: A triangular face has wide cheekbones and a pointy, angular chin. A long, full beard, like the Olde English, can look best with this face shape. Let the beard fill out below the chin to make the chin appear larger. Another option is a bit of 5 O'Clock Shadow Stubble. 
 

3. The Rectangle Face  
This could be you if… Your chin is distinctly squared off, and the length of your face measurement is greater than cheekbones and jawline.

Beards to Try: Facial hair options for this face shape can draw attention to the center of the face and cause the cheeks to appear full. A long face includes wide jawbones and a squared chin. The long face shape looks good with a Chin Strap or a nice Boxed Beard with full hair on the sides and a bit shorter on the bottom.

4. The Square Face 
This could be you if… Your jaw is sharp, not rounded and relatively wide, and all your measurements (face, forehead, cheek bones and chin) are quite similar.   
Celebs with a Square Shaped Face: Daniel Radcliffe, Gerard Butler 
Outline of a square face. Beards to Try: The classically masculine square face is noted by the strong jawline that should be complemented but not highlighted by a beard with sharp right angles. A Full Goatee with a Mustache will elongate the chin, making the face look more rounded. If beards aren’t your thing, a Chevron Mustache will look good alongside wider facial features typically present on a square face.

5. The Oval Face 
This could be you if… Your jawline is rounded rather than sharp, and your face length is longer than the width of your cheekbones.

Outline of an oval face. Beards to try: The oval face is the most proportional of the face shapes—lucky you. There isn’t really any way to go wrong with the oval shape. Someone with an oval face has nice cheekbones that extend slightly past the jawbone. The chin is balanced and symmetrical with the forehead. One thing to keep in mind when considering the best beard for oval faces is to use clean lines – no stragglers on the cheeks or neck.
